Hospital's Poor Care Supported Through Patient's Death
William Paschal was admitted to Franklin Regional Medical center in December for elective knee surgery. When he arrived, he had chest pain, shortness of breath, and numbness in his left arm. Doctors continued with his knee replacement surgery even though his symptoms suggested a severe heart condition. Unfortunately, Paschall's heart stopped before the doctors received the test results. Several federal investigations were performed and found that nurses and doctors had failed to record critical medical information. In addition, the hospital had allowed nurse anesthetists to work without required supervision. A third and unpublished investigation also found problems with the hospital's pharmaceutical and respiratory services.
