Nursing Homes Take New Roles as Hospitals Struggle
New York hospitals are struggling with cutbacks and budget constraints, causing nursing homes in the area to create a new role in treating patients that are well enough to be sent home but still need additional care. Nursing homes recently have seen patients seeking short-term, rehabilitative care. As a result, facilities are shrinking the amount of long-term beds to add space to short-term care. A report from the United Hospital Fund stated that in the year 2000, 67,777 patients entered nursing homes for short-term care, and in 2006, the number of patients increased to 104,723. Two facilities that are planning major changes in New York are the Jewish Home & Hospital Lifecare System's Upper West Side nursing home and Village Care of New York.
