Hand Washing Technology Tested at University of Miami
The University of Miami UM-JMH Center for Patient Safety started tests of a hand hygiene compliance program. The new technology uses infrared and radio frequency identification to time stamp hand washings. The goal of the new technology is to reduce hospital-acquired infections. The program uses IR-RF sensors in the soap dispensers to ready staff's identification badges and monitor the frequency of their hand washing. The program knows who, when, and were the hand washing occurred. The system can alert staff members if they have forgotten to wash their hands. After initial tests at the Center for Patient Safety, pilot hospital setting tests are expected.
