Woman Dies Waiting 24 Hours in ER
Esmin Green, a woman who had been waiting in the Kings County psychiatric ER waiting room in New York City, was pronounced dead when she was finally brough into the ER. Supposedly, the members of the hospital staff had seen her lying in the floor but took no action until about an hour later. This is on record by the video surveillance. Green's autopsy showed that she died from pulmonary embolism, which occurs when a blood clot forms in the leg, breaks off, and travels to one or both lungs. Green had waited for a psychiatric-unit bed to open up for more than 24 hours. ER wait times have increased over the past few years, especially with the boarding of inpatients. When patients come to the ER and need to be admitted overnight, they have to stay in the ER until an inpatient bed becomes available. As more patients come, the waits grow and the environment becomes unsafe - a recent study found that patients who board for more than six hours in the ER are 4 percent more likely to die.
