Americans Skipping Doctor Visits to Save Money, But May Have Costly Effects
The economic situation is causing many Americans to cut back on their medicine, doctor visits, and screening tests. While this may be a short-term way to save money, it may be costlier in the long-term when sicker patients will need more expensive treatments. Numbers are showing that Americans are continuing to put their health at risk. U.S. hospitals report an increase in ER patients, including uninsured patients who could have been treated elsewhere. The number of prescriptions filled reported for the end of June quarter reported a 0.4 percent reduction in the number of prescriptions. This is the first time it has not risen in the past 12 years in which it has been tracked! The results of a Kaiser Family Foundation poll showed that 36 percent of people stated that they or a family member have put off needed care. In addition, about one-third had skipped a recommended test or treatment and one-fifth stated that, as a result, their condition had gotten worse.
