Caution on Shortcut Educational Programs for CNAs
Future Nursing Assistants should be cautioned regarding shortcut educational programs that do not adequately prepare students. Such courses include those that offer online courses and those that only teach the state exam. There even was a program that claimed to certify students did not require them to have a high school diploma, GED, nor a placement test. Many students have tried such options - but chances are they will not pass the exam; therefore, losing their money and having to enroll in another nursing program.

Dottie Bement, the coordinator and assistant professor of the Nursing Assistant program at Sandhills Community College, has seen such experiences firsthand. One current student at Sandhills has spent several hundred dollars for a shortcut program. The student ended up failing the test, and is now enrolled with Sandhills. The student has found a notable difference between the two programs. The Nursing Assistant program at Sandhills is state-approved and prepares students to work under the supervision of licensed health-care professionals in providing nursing care to patients of all ages. Emphasis is placed on growth and development throughout the life span, personal care, vital signs, communication, nutrition, and other aspects of the field.

Dottie clearly states that salaries in health care are directly tied to the amount of education one receives. Students who choose more quality career options will not only receive better preparation to entering their field, but also have better paying nursing career opportunities. It is highly recommended that students applying for Nursing Assistant programs have their GED or high school diploma - doing so makes them more employable. Research shows that those who do so make higher salaries than those who do not.
