Priorities for Nurse Retention Examined in a New Study
A study to be published in this month's issue of the "American Journal" reports that hospitals will need to improve nursing management and take steps to reduce on-the-job stress to retain nurses in this ongoing confrontation of nursing shortages. The study surveyed nurses from 35 states who received their first license between August 1, 2004 to July 31, 2005 and had been employed for up to 18 months. There was a total of 3,226 respondents, and of those, 610 had already left their first job (41.8 percent due to poor management and 37.2 percent due to wanting experience in a different clinical area). In addition, the results showed that the majority of nurses were generally pleased with their jobs. Although they reported positive work-group cohesion, they also reported a lack of support from their supervisors. Over one-third of the nurses plan to search for a new positions within the next year.

Most participants reported a hazardous working environment - 25 percent of respondents had received at least one needle-stick in a year, 39 percent had one strain or sprain, 21 percent had a cut or laceration, 46 percent obtained a bruise or contusion, and 62 percent received verbal abuse on the job. In addition, 25% of the nurses felt that inadequate supplies made their job "difficult to impossible" to be performed.

The study also found that newly licensed nurses found their jobs to be difficult with working long hours. 51 percent of the newly licensed nurses worked voluntary overtime and 13 percent worked mandatory overtime. 61 percent were assigned to night, evenings, or rotating shifts. About two-thirds reported their work interfering with family life on at least for days a month.
