10 Nurses Resign and Cause Dispute
Controversy exists over the abrupt resignation of 10 nurses at Smithtown nursing center. The nurses, who were recruited from the Philippines and signed a three-year contract to work, claimed that they were not paid properly or given the promised shifts. Unionized workers have to give 10 days notice before a work stoppage. The nurses were nonunion, allowing them no requirement to give notice under the National Labor Relations Act. It seems to all be coming down to whether Avalon Gardens Rehabilitation and Health Center and prosecutors can prove whether the walkout endangered the patients, which consisted of severely ill children. Earlier this week at a press conference, the nurses all pleaded not guilty and denied the charges. The lawyer for SentosaCare, which is the nursing home's parent company, says that pictures of the children show that the care was compromised and that the nurses put their contract dispute above the children's needs. The nurses' attorney states that the nurses did not endanger the patients and provided the appropriate care until the end of their shift.
