Senate votes to eliminate mandatory overtime for nurses
After seven years of debate, the mandatory overtime bill unanimously voted in by senate heads for final passage. The aim of the bill is to make patients, nurses and the overall health care system safer.
Supporters of the bill have argued that mandatory overtime leads to increases in errors, puts patients at risk, and has made nursing an unattractive profession. Where opponents fear that the bill will leave hospitals under-staffed, especially during emergency situations.
The bill provides nurses, nurses' assistants and direct caregivers the option of volunteer for overtime, and protects those who fail to volunteer from being disciplines or discharged. To protect health care facilities in times of natural disaster, widespread disease outbreak, unexpected absences and call-outs employers are allowed to require overtime to sustain patient safety.
