Dramatic Increase of Filipino Nurses Seeking Work in the US
The Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) reported a dramatic increase - almost a 50 percent increase to be exact - of Filipino nurses seeking work in the United States from the time period of January to September 2007. A total of 15,083 Philippine-educated nurses took the eligibility test of the US National Council of State Boards of Nursing Inc. (NCSBN), and the amount of nurses who took the NCLEX in the time period of January to September came close to the amount that took the examination in all of 2006. Alex Aguilar, a TUCP spokesperson, states that the Philippines still led the five countries with the greatest number of non-US nationals who took the NCLEX for the first time between the time period of January to September. India came in second, South Korea third, Canada fourth, and Cuba fifth. While Filipino nurses previously had to travel overseas to take the NCLEX in test centers elsewhere in Asia and the Pacific, they are now allowed to take the test in Manila due to the installation of a new international test center in Makati City.
