Ontario Health Care Workers Receive New Respirators and Safety Needles
According to the Ontario Nurses' Association, about 70,000 Canadian health-care professionals are accidentally pricked by a needle each year and half of these injuries occur in Ontario. Ontario health care workers will now have protection against life-threatening diseases through the use of new respirators and safety needles. The 55 million new N95 respirators will protect better than typical surgical masks. Such protection will give nurses a greater peace of mind when it comes to treating patients. The government also amended the Occupational Health and Safety Act, making safety-engineered needs or needle-less systems mandatory in all hospitals by September 1, 2008.
